The Cache Economic Development Authority has voted to terminate its lease with the private owner of Hummingbird Golf Course.

The “friendly separation” — approved in an authority meeting Thursday — was necessary to allow the owner, Stillwater businessman Randy Wedel, to negotiate the potential sale of the course to the Comanche Tribe, authority board member Randy Batt said.

Hummingbird Golf Course closed several months ago after its subtenant, the nonprofit Teen Challenge organization, ended its golf program there.

The authority has been working with residents of the housing addition adjacent to the course to keep it maintained, but Batt said its involvement as an intermediary between Wedel and the tribe was cluttering the negotiation process.

Batt said he expects a deal between the two parties soon and that the golf course will not remain closed permanently.

Batt said he expects an outstanding loan assumed by the authority for equipment and labor at the course several years ago — a loan on which Teen Challenge had been making payments — will be included in the negotiations.
